20 Years Ago: Mid Canterbury Win The Cup
20 YEARS AGO TODAY - MID CANTERBURY BEATS NORTHLAND
The last couple of days have been a great chance to hear the memories of Brett Hood and Dean Harrison. Today, 20 years since Day 3 of Mid Canterbury's win, our post is about the team as a whole.
This was the first team to ever mount a successful challenge for the Cup with a team featuring ZERO past or future First Class/List A/Twenty20 capped players (since matched by Otago Country and Buller).
Batting first, Mid Canterbury owed their 249 to opener Dayle Jemmett (60), and middle order batsmen Jason Overend (40) and Matthew Fine (58). Double figure contributions also came from captain Robert Madden, Garth Jemmett and Corey Hastie.
With the ball Dean Harrison took the bulk of the spoils with 5/45. Corey Hastie backed up his batting cameo with 2/12, and Matthew Fine added to his fifty with 2/36.
One of the great Hawke Cup underdog stories, and remains Mid Canterbury's only Cup tenure.
